Protect and Support Growing Trees

As trees grow, some naturally develop structural weaknesses, such as overextended limbs, tight branch unions, or multiple stems growing from the same point, known as co-dominant stems. These features, especially co-dominant stems, can increase the risk of failure during strong winds, heavy snow, or ice. Occasionally, some unions or limbs can begin to split or crack. If it is decided that preservation is a valid option, a cable and brace in conjunction with a reduction prune is the preferred method.

Cabling and bracing support systems can help reduce risk of failure by providing additional stability to vulnerable parts of the tree. Steel cables are typically installed high in the canopy to help share the load between co-dominant stems, while bracing is done with steel threaded rods installed through the union to provide additional support.

It is important to understand that these systems do not eliminate risk entirely, but they can significantly reduce the likelihood of failure when used appropriately. Combined with thoughtful pruning and periodic monitoring, these systems can help trees with structural concerns continue providing benefits for years to come.
